The New Yorker wins two National Magazine Awards

The winners of the National Magazine Awards were announced last night, and two New Yorker writers were among the honorees: Rachel Aviv won in the Profile Writing category and Luke Mogelson won in the Video category.

Rachel Aviv, a staff writer, was recognized for her [nuanced portrait](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/04/05/how-elizabeth-loftus-changed-the-meaning-of-memory) of Elizabeth Loftus, one of the most influential psychologists of her generation. Loftus became celebrated for helping to render obsolete the idea that memories exist in a kind of mental library, as literal representations of past events. According to Loftus, memories are reconstructed, not replayed. But as Aviv deftly reveals, it is not only other people’s memories that are malleable—Loftus herself seems to resist confronting the truth of her family’s past, and what may have shaped her career. 

Luke Mogelson, a contributing writer, won for his [shocking and surreal footage](https://www.newyorker.com/news/video-dept/a-reporters-footage-from-inside-the-capitol-siege) from inside the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Mogelson had attended President Donald Trump’s Stop the Steal rally on the National Mall that day and followed Trump supporters as they forced their way into the Capitol and Senate chamber afterward. He used his phone’s camera to capture chaotic scenes from what followed. The resulting film provides a visceral record of Americans holding democracy hostage.

Additionally, Stephania Taladrid, a contributing writer, received an ASME Next Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by journalists under the age of thirty.

#WeAreCondeNast: Dominique Dirand – Consumer Revenue Director

Dominique Dirand, Condé Nast France’s Consumer Revenue Director, shares what she’d do with an extra 8 hours in a day, her career highlight and her productivity hack.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

I grew up in a very small village in the east of France and then I entered a business school. After graduation, I lived in Asia for 2 years, first in Malaysia as a French and Economics teacher and then in Singapore and Australia as an Export Manager. 

After spending almost more than 20 years in the news/magazines sector as a Circulation and Marketing Director, I joined Condé Nast France in March 2020, only a few days before the COVID lockdown. A very atypical beginning! I always liked working in an international context, which is why I was really interested in joining a company like Condé Nast with a multicultural approach and global projects.

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

Well, as in France, people usually don’t know Condé Nast but they do know their French brands. I start by saying that I work for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest and GQ, specifying that my job consists of maximizing and optimizing the consumer revenue of these brands, on newsstands or subscription marketing channels. My job is ensuring that the print copies will arrive correctly to the readers, whether they are newsstands buyers or subscribers, and I plan all the marketing operations to drive the number of buyers and the revenue.

In addition, I often present my job as an attractive project source, like, for example, the launch of Vogue Collection, which is a great and exciting Consumer Revenue diversification. 

__What does Women’s International Day/History Month mean to you?__

As long as women will be under-considered in the world having an International Women’s Day will be a useful way to raise the level of awareness of women’s status. Globally, fighting for women’s rights is a fight for human rights in general. 

Even though it can be taken for granted in our westernised countries, being a woman in some parts of the world is not an enviable status. The fact that in some countries there are still birth selection shows we are far from gender equity. And even if gender equity is one of the fundamental principles of the European Union, there are still struggles ahead of us, for the place of the woman in the society, and in the work. 

__What’s your go-to productivity trick?__

I try not to be influenced by false problems!

__What project or initiative are you most proud to have worked on so far?__

I think it was in my previous media company, when myself and a journalist launched a new range of thematic special editions with print magazines and videos support, on how to make learning grammar, spelling, sciences and maths fun. This new approach of learning became very popular.

__What do you consider to be your career highlight?__

Well, the transformation of subscriptions, from traditional print subscriptions model, to digital enriched experience, with subscribers-only content is one of my favourite projects, as it’s the way we adapt our offers, contents and proposals to the new reading usages. The transformation to digital, when you, like me, had the chance to have known the great period of successful print magazines, is an incredible opportunity. 

__If you didn't have to sleep, how would you spend the extra eight hours each day?__

Whoa, 8 more hours in a day, what a gift! 

I would learn another foreign language, maybe Portuguese, or Italian

I would practice my tap dance (I started learning tap dance this year, but never have enough time to review how to play good rhythm music with my feet…)

I would read all the books that are waiting for me on my bookshelves

I would knit sweaters for my friends and family. 

I would rediscover my beautiful city, Paris, as if I was a tourist.

__When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?__

As many young little girls, I wanted to be a school teacher or a hairdresser!

__If you could time travel, which period of time would you go back to visit?__

Very difficult to be limited to one period! I’m very curious in the “Live my life,” so it’s even more thrilling if it’s in history!

Maybe the great navigation time, it was so incredible and exciting to discover new lands, new civilizations, new cultures and realize that the world and the humanity brings new horizons and human treasures. 

And maybe also the XVIIIth century, as a courtesan, to experience once the wearing of an extraordinary but heavy dress, and come back in 2022 to appreciate the ultimate comfort of a pair of jeans! 

More closer to now, I loved “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen’s movie. What a unique atmosphere to immerse oneself in the Paris of the 1920’s, with the intellectual and artistic bubbling.

__What's your favorite food?__

Sweet glutinous rice with mango. I was eating it almost every day when I was living in Malaysia. In fact, I don’t do it at home, but I always find some good Asian restaurants in the area that offer this delicious dessert.

CEO Roger Lynch discusses Condé Nast's global, digital transformation 

CEO Roger Lynch discussed Condé Nast's transformation and global, digital future with [The Sunday Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/roger-lynch-why-i-had-to-transform-conde-nast-r89vvkq5n). 

In a wide-ranging interview, Lynch detailed the company's all-formats and borderless content strategy. "Our audiences are looking for good content all over the world, just as they seek out the best dramas on Netflix," he told The Times. "There are no borders to content anymore. We need to reorganize around that.”

Lynch also shared promising business results that have followed a strategic plan that has included retooling Condé Nast's editorial operations, doubling down on video and diversifying the company's revenue sources. 

"We had to invest to grow digital and e-commerce," he said. "We had to build a whole new consumer revenue division and invest in our video division."

Vogue Turkey and Chopard held Vogue Green Carpet Awards by Chopard award ceremony at Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus on March 22 in order to raise awareness about sustainability in the luxury industry.

On Tuesday, March 22, [Vogue Turkey and Chopard held an award ceremony](https://vogue.com.tr/en-vogue/vogue-green-carpet-awards-by-chopard) at Mandarin Oriental  Bosphorus in order to raise awareness about sustainability in the luxury industry and to encourage local brands, individuals, and foundations working on sustainability in the industry.

Chopard is the main sponsor of the Vogue Green Carpet Awards, which have been held in various editions around the world for several years but is being held in Turkey for the first time. Vogue Green Carpet Awards by Chopard honored the names who took steps to make significant environmental contributions.

During the ceremony, awards were presented in five different categories. The award winners were Ecording in the Nature Friendly Initiative of the Year category; Fashion Revolution Turkey in the Social Impact Platform of the Year category; Huner in the Sustainable Fashion Brand of the Year category; Esmiyor podcast in the Inspirational Social Media Account of the Year category; and climate activist Ela Naz Bildal in the Young Activist of the Year category.

Hosted by Vogue Turkey and Chopard's Turkey Representative Tektaş Watches & Jewellery Group, the event brought respectable names together such as Business Council for Sustainable Development President Ebru Dildar Edin, who made a difference in her field with her sustainability studies, UNICEF Turkey Representative Regina De Demonicis, UN SDSN Turkey Director Assistant Prof. Dr. Tamer Atabarut, and Consul General of Switzerland Jülien Thöni.

Inside PhotoVogue’s first global open call

"PhotoVogue was born in the digital age and made it its mission to be a driving force for change," says Conde Nast Italy's Alessia Glaviano of her brainchild. 

Launched in 2011 by Glaviano, PhotoVogue serves as an international database of the most interesting voices in contemporary photography, with work submitted from image-makers from around the world. It's mission has always been to champion talent and contribute to shaping a richer and more diverse industry.

Today the platform — which only had local open calls — goes global with its [first global open call](https://www.vogue.in/fashion/content/photovogues-global-open-call-the-next-great-fashion-image-makers) and is supported by all 26 editions of Vogue.

Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue, chats with us about PhotoVogue’s mission, how the expansion reinforces its D+I goal and her proudest moment.

__PhotoVogue began as an initiative from Vogue Italy - where did the idea come from?__

It all started when we launched Vogue.it, [Vogue Italia's website](https://www.vogue.it/). I wanted [to create something meaningful for photography](https://www.vogue.com/photovogue), at a time when it was already ubiquitous online. I felt that what was missing was a curated platform dedicated to it. 

The other important thing is that I wanted to be open not only to fashion, but to all genres of photography, because Vogue is a brand that touches upon all aspects of life and creativity. I couldn't predict that it would evolve and become what it is today. I worked tirelessly, night and day, keeping the integrity of it, building the community, finding talent and mentoring them.

__You’re now expanding PhotoVogue globally and across all the Vogue editions. Tell us a little about how this came to be.__

It felt like a natural step for PhotoVogue to become global as it counted more than 300,000 artists from 210 countries (the entire world!). For many years PhotoVogue and Condé Nast have been collaborating with Red Hook Labs, founded in Brooklyn by Jimmy Moffat, as we shared the same mission: to empower talent and give opportunities to people and communities who have been historically excluded.

I will be forever grateful to Christiane Mack, Condé Nast’s Chief Content Operations Officer, for having the vision to see the potential of the project, believing in it, wanting to expand it and being such a great leader and supporter. I also have to thank my dearest friend and mentor Jimmy Moffat for helping guide me through this process with integrity and soul.

__Going global with any local program or initiative often comes with challenges, did you face any and how did you overcome them?__

Of course. We all had a tumultuous couple of years, the pandemic, a war, the integration of the businesses and our overall transformation, but I truly believe in the new vision for Condé Nast and in our leadership. I experienced first hand how enriching it is to work side-by-side with people from different cultures now that I have a global role. 

In the beginning of something new of course there is always a lot of work to be done, but I love challenges, and I believe so much in this project that nothing scares me.

I also would like to say that I feel so lucky to be part of the Global Content Operations. People like Christiane and our manager Millie Tran are extremely talented and supportive and they have been such advocates for creating a new culture, both for our team and for the company at large. A culture that is inclusive, transparent and honest.

__What are you most looking forward to with this new stage of PhotoVogue?__ 

I think that having all Vogues onboard will guarantee more opportunities for artists from every part of the world, this is what I’m looking for. Discovering and nurturing talents, and giving them the opportunity to emerge and work within the Condé Nast Global network.

Unfortunately, in our society discrimination and prejudice still occur, making it particularly difficult for diverse talent—in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexuality, education, background, and so on—to emerge. Celebrating our differences is Condé Nast’s goal, and diversity and inclusivity are our core values. Our ambition with PhotoVogue is to create an effective platform towards achieving a more balanced and inclusive vision, ensuring that all talents have equal opportunities to succeed. 

__Aside from the platform, there is also a PhotoVogue Festival – tell us a little about it.__

I used to go to photography festivals around the world and I thought that there wasn’t one linked to an important fashion publication. Festivals are great occasions to bring together people who have the same passions, and the community being such an important part of PhotoVogue I decided to have our own festival! It has been a great success since its first edition in 2016. Young people travel from all around the world to come to our yearly event. 

I’m proud to say that it is the first festival dedicated to the shared ground between Ethics and Aesthetics and since 2016 has brought together our community touching upon meaningful contemporary issues and furthering the conversation around the promotion of creativity and diversity in image-making. 

We have explored the power of female representation, promoted diversity in all its forms, examined the concept of masculinity, deconstructed stereotypes, made a hymn to the values of community and hope and reclaimed an alternative, different way of telling a tale with “Reframing History” in 2021. 

My dream is to lead the expansion of our festival, building on the success of the Italian edition, which has engaged the city of Milan for the past six years with events, talks, exhibitions, portfolio reviews, and many other initiatives. The new global PhotoVogue could be supported by the same caliber of events and experiences internationally.

__What's the process for submissions like?__

Mondays are open for the community to submit single images to be reviewed by the PhotoVogue team. We receive an average of 16,000 images. By expanding globally, PhotoVogue will soon accept submissions from video makers, digital artists and illustrators, creating a new generation of multimedia contributors. To make our scouting objectives more effective PhotoVogue will promote open calls to scout diverse talent in specific regions in the world or by theme. The open calls will be evaluated by Condé Nast staff worldwide and visual experts from the broader international visual community, with different backgrounds and vision so as to try to provide the most inclusive and multifaceted perspective. 

Today we are launching our first Global Open Call for “The Next Great Fashion Image Makers,” and our first Local Open Call, “Italian Panorama,” which is dedicated to Italy as an homage to PhotoVogue’s origins. 

This will be the first of many local calls to single out the most talented artists in specific regions of the world and give them the opportunity to emerge and work within the Condé Nast Global Network. 

The Open Calls will run from April 4 until June 25 and is completely free. We are looking for artists who express themselves with photography, video, or both, and anyone 18+ can apply. In regard to the Global Open Call, all the Vogues worldwide will publish a portfolio of the best submissions, some artists will also be selected to collaborate for an editorial and the most talented ones will be part of the main exhibition at PhotoVogue Festival 2022 in Milan. 

We are looking for visions that push the boundaries of the current fashion landscape. We want to highlight the next generation of socially conscious fashion image makers, artists who are a driving force for change and whose work can engage in a dialogue with different genres, from documentary to art. We seek artists who are able to tackle issues relating to social justice and sustainability in powerful, vibrant images and films. Fashion has become a shared language and one of the primary tools to build identity, and Vogue, through its photography and stories, has always tackled its intersection with sociopolitical issues by raising questions, embracing innovation and even influencing change. We are committed to paving the way for the new generation of fashion image makers!

__The work submitted is reviewed by an esteemed jury made up of industry experts?__ 

Yes, I think the jury is such an important part of being able to provide the most inclusive and multifaceted perspective and I’m very proud of the jury of our first Global Open Call. We have 80 Jury Members: editors from all the editions of Vogue worldwide, and visual experts from the broader international visual community, with different backgrounds and vision.

__Over the years, PhotoVogue has helped launch the careers of young artists, can you tell us a little about that? __

In the past, PhotoVogue has helped launch the careers of numerous artists internationally by featuring them in Vogue Italia and its website, showcasing their work in exhibitions and collaborations in branded content with prominent brands. Just to name a few, some artists that ended up shooting the covers of Vogue’s editions worldwide include Kennedi Carter, Camila Falquez, Nadine Ijewere, Mous Lamrabat and Sonia Szóstak. Now that we are globally engaging all the editions of Vogue worldwide, the possibilities to feature artists from different backgrounds, countries, and aesthetics have multiplied. 

__There’s a D+I component to this initiative. As well as championing new talent and voices, one of the main goals of PhotoVogue has been to reach into historically excluded communities and tell their stories visually – tell us about why this was important to you and how PhotoVogue has achieved this over the years? __

Let me begin by saying that I’m very proud to be part of a company who has made a clear commitment towards D&I. Celebrating our differences and promoting many voices is our goal and our reality. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths and it perfectly aligns with PhotoVogue’s mission. 

I think that our society has made great progress regarding a more inclusive representation of diversity, in this sense, the people of the web have positively led the way influencing brands and traditional media alike. The new way of looking at gender fluidity, at the endless forms of beauty, of ethnic backgrounds and origins is an achievement that is changing the contemporary aesthetic standards and is beginning to alter people’s cultural and identity codes in terms of openness, dialogue and encounter. This started to occur only when the narrative was being extended to include not only those whose story we are telling, but also those who tell those stories and who often share the same life experience. 

We should always ask ourselves who is telling the story, and we as a publishing company have a great responsibility in making sure to strive for diversity not only in front but also behind the scenes, so to speak. 

For too long our industry has perpetrated clichés and reinforced an ideological vision that is the result of ignorance and lapse of judgment. Just like words, or perhaps even more so than words, images can hurt, cause misunderstandings, consolidate prejudices. I believe that fashion is intrinsically political. By its very nature, it needs to engage in topics such as gender, wealth, identity building as well as engaging the dreams and interactions of entire generations.

There are no topics that fashion cannot concern itself with. Nowadays a magazine is not anymore confined to the print magazine, we communicate with an impressive number of people from all over the world, our stories are not only read by those who buy the physical copy and this involves a great responsibility. PhotoVogue was born in the digital age and made it its mission to be a driving force for change. 

__Is there a PhotoVogue story that sticks out to you?__

I have so many stories to share, so many incredible artists that I met through PhotoVogue and whose life we touched. Here I’d like to share with you a story that reflects our commitment towards creating a more just and ethical visual world. 

Over the years I have personally art directed many collaborations between PhotoVogue and Gucci. I would like to thank them because of their vision towards inclusivity, which aligns with ours, and for the freedom and trust that they placed in me and PhotoVogue.  

One of these collaborations was a Gucci Beauty campaign featuring Ellie Goldstein, a model with Down syndrome – represented by Zebedee Management, a revolutionary modeling agency that represents people with disabilities – through the eye of David PD Hyde, a PhotoVogue artist who also has a disability. The campaign went viral, everyone talked about it, Ellie became a star and hasn’t stopped working since then. Until five years ago, this was unthinkable.  

Growing up I asked myself what must kids with disabilities think about themselves if they never see themselves? Not in a magazine, not in the movies, nowhere. Or in the eventuality that they do see themselves, then the narrative will always be either pitiful, or heroic or a mix of the two. The fact that I contributed, even an inch, to the shift that is happening towards a more just representation of people with disabilities is the thing I'm proudest of.

#WeAreCondeNast: Natasha Forde – Global Product Support Manager

Global Product Support Manager Natasha Forde, shares how Kendall Jenner helps her explain her role, the one thing she doesn’t regret and how she would make the world a better place.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

After finally deciding to get certified as an Agile project manager, my best friend (who was temping in the accounting department at the time) sent me a job description for an Agile Project Manager and asked “Is this what you do?” 

I read the spec and after some debate and doubt that a company like Condé Nast would even want someone like me, I decided to just go for it. After three interviews and waiting another four weeks for an offer I joined as the first Project manager for CNI (as it was named at the time) to manage moving all brands onto the Copilot (Compass) platform. Since then I have been involved in various projects and changed roles a few times. 

Five years later I now find myself heading up Global Product Support and directing five teams with 38 people: four Global Product Support teams who provide L2 support for our Revenue, Business, Editorial and Data product applications and the IT service management team, who deliver Problem, Change and Knowledge management across the business. 

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__ 

My friends and family have never understood what I do. When I was a project manager it was near enough impossible so I just said IT (LOL). Now I find it’s much easier to describe what my teams do rather than what I do — because let's face it, leading five teams, we could be here forever. I tend to keep it simple and describe what the Revenue Product Support team do (because it's the one that most people will relate to) and tell them a true story: 

One Saturday evening at midnight, I was scrolling through my news feed on my phone. An article published via Vogue came up but they had spelled Kendall Jenner’s name wrong in the header. It said “Kenell Jenner.” So I Slacked my team and showed them the mistake (they work 24/7). Within three minutes it was fixed…that's what my team does!

__What does Women’s International Day/History Month mean to you?__

This is a day that makes me proud to be a woman. I’m a mother of two, a partner of 20 years. On top of that I am a leader of 38. This takes a lot of multitasking, strength and creativity. These, I feel, are all key components of a woman and it's great to be able to showcase that and be openly proud about it on this day of recognition. 

__What are you most proud of achieving in your career so far?__

Before joining the Global Support team I never had experience of actually managing a team. It makes me proud to have taken away all my likes and dislikes from previous managers/leaders and mix it with my career knowledge and to have created the amazing team that I have. This time last year I had one team with about four people in it, with the task of building an offshore team of six. My aim was to exceed expectations but I don’t think anybody thought this org would expand in the way it did, least of all me. 

I am so proud of each person on my team and it warms my heart when I hear my team talking about how appreciative they are of me. It tells me that I’m supposed to be a leader and am doing a good job.

__Do you have any goals you’d like to achieve this year?__ 

Workwise, to ensure that all teams under my org get the recognition they deserve. The  support teams within an organization are so often forgotten, but often are some of the most hard working. My teams are so passionate about what they do and are so loyal to the business. I would love to see them succeed and grow as a team as well as individuals. It's my goal to work with them to ensure this happens. 

Personally, my goal is to succeed in going on the three holidays I have booked this year. I NEED to get on a plane and enjoy some well-deserved breaks with my family. COVID please don’t dash this dream again!   

__What question do you never get asked that you’d love to answer?__

Do you ever regret NOT going to university? Honestly, the answer would be NO because I think for ME if I did I wouldn’t be where I am now.

__If you could snap your fingers and instantly make the world better, what would you do?__

Make EVERY individual embrace all cultures rather than discriminate against them. If everyone could focus on the beauty of others rather than continuously trying to find faults the world would be a much nicer place to live in. 

__At a company field day, what is the event you would most likely win?__ 

I’m competitive but not that great at winning LOL. So I would make my own event and be the DJ for the party at the end of the day. I’m always the life of the party and I'm a good selecter when it comes to music.  

__If you could take a year off from work, what would you do?__ 

Without a doubt I would travel to as many countries that I could afford to with my family. Work holiday allocation is nowhere near enough, especially when you have kids who are still in school (I swear these kids spend more time out of school on breaks than in it LOL).

__There are now 25 hours in a day! How do you spend your extra hour?__

Asleep…I’m tired! Hahaha.

This week, Vogue Japan's Kimmy Fukuda shares how she got her start at Condé Nast over two decades ago, the unique skill she brings to her job and what brings her joy.

“Dogs have always been my companions since I was a little girl, as well as horses, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and cats,” she says. “I think this is because I feel at my happiest when I am with animals.”

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

Before the launch of Vogue Japan, the president of the newly established Condé Nast Japan, who was British, was looking for a personal assistant, and I was approached by a recruiter I knew. Surprisingly, 2022 will be my 24th year with the company. I feel a sense of miraculous fate at play in my life. My current boss, Jun Kitada, is a consultative managing director as well as a supportive team leader who has also been with the company for over two decades. I feel like giving myself a little pat on the back in terms of doing this one thing for the longest time in my life, but I am sure I have only survived this long because I was blessed with three fantastic bosses, wonderful colleagues and a great company. I want to take this opportunity to say that I am grateful to Condé Nast for accepting me for who I am.

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

Secretary to the president of a foreign company. However, in Japan, the word "secretary" suggests a stereotypical old-fashioned secretary, so I always make sure to add a word or two about the fact that my work is not at all like that.

__What does Women's International Day/History Month mean to you?__

Fortunately, the women in my community can proudly celebrate this wonderful day. However, there are still many countries where women are subjected to levels of discrimination that are beyond belief and thinking about it really breaks my heart. I sincerely hope that every woman can enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

__What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?__

Perhaps I would like to live somewhere further away from the crowded city of Tokyo and closer to the beach.

__What is a unique skill you bring to your job?__

I don’t think “unique” is the right word, but I have the ability to keep calm under pressure. And as a Japanese person who spent much of my youth in the United States, I developed a perspective that allows me to look at both Japanese and American culture with one foot inside the door and one foot on the porch, so to speak.

__Who do you most admire and why?__

Dogs are my favorites, but I love most other animals as well. Dogs have always been my companions since I was a little girl, as well as horses, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and cats. I think this is because I feel at my happiest when I am with animals.

__You just won a trip to go anywhere in the world! Where would you go?__

A place surrounded by wilderness, perhaps in Canada or Switzerland, where I could enjoy outdoor life in close contact with nature and engage in sports such as trekking, kayaking, skiing, etc.

__Is there anything you would like to achieve this year professionally or personally?__

Professionally, I am committed to helping the company succeed in every aspect of its ongoing transformation, both locally and globally. Personally, I want to stay healthy and do more outdoor activities.

__If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?__

That’s a tough question! Because eating is one of my biggest interests, next to dogs. When I have spare time, I try all kinds of healthy home cooking. I love to cook, bake, and entertain friends at my house. But to be restricted to eating just one food? For the rest of my life? My tastes are far too diverse and capricious for that. 

__List three items on your bucket list.__

I don’t have a bucket list. So, I suppose the first item on my bucket list would be to make a bucket list.

Inside GQ Germany’s reinvention

Change is afoot at GQ Germany, under the new leadership of Tobias Frericks.

Frericks started working at Condé Nast in 2004 as the Fashion Editor of GQ Germany and GQ Style. After a brief stint at Vanity Fair in 2008, he returned to GQ Germany in 2009 as the Fashion Director. Fast-forward to today, and he’s now the brand’s Head of Editorial Content. 

From highlighting the art scene in Berlins, to reflecting a “new masculinity” in the brand’s design, Frericks shares how he is taking GQ Germany in a bold,new direction. 

__Congratulations on your first issue as GQ Germany’s Head of Editorial Content. The design is much cleaner, not to mention fresher. Tell us about the evolutionary process you’ve been on, and how you arrived at this new look and feel for the brand?__

The new look is a natural step in terms of how we’re developing the brand. Along with a fresh take on GQ’s core ideas, it was also necessary to adopt our vision of the “new masculinity” on a visual level. This design – less cluttered, more minimalist – gives us the space to really explore that approach.

__What do you want GQ Germany to stand for?__ 

Our understanding of masculinity has changed tremendously in recent years and I want GQ Germany to reflect that. New perspectives on what it means to identify as “a man” – the whole spectrum of that – allow us to look at classic GQ content and tell these stories with a new and different angle. This should prove compelling for old and new readers alike. My father, who’s in his late 70s, looked at our current issue and was surprised at how genuinely interesting it was for him. Talk about reaching new audiences! 

__Tell us about your vision for shaping GQ Germany’s local storytelling and the importance of “local” content itself?__ 

Germany has so much to offer, yet we at GQ have perhaps neglected that a little in the past. From its exceptional art scene to current happenings in Berlin, there is so much going on. These stories are not only relevant to our readers, but also to international audiences – that we can now reach thanks to our collaborative approach in conjunction with our sibling titles.

__Robert Pattinson is your first cover star, as part of the global issue. What does he mean to you and your audiences in Germany?__

Robert really embodies a new type of Hollywood actor. A leading man who’s not afraid to take risks – from picking roles in smaller indie productions to participating in photoshoots like our cover story. I think that’s something our readers in Germany and around the world can really value. Plus, by allowing us to portray him in this way, it hopefully shows other A-listers that they, too, can be a little more daring. 

__What can we expect to see from GQ Germany in the coming months?__

We’ll be working on bringing this new vision to all our channels. This includes events where we can really engage with our community and show everyone what the new GQ Germany is about. 

On a European level, I’m also looking forward to our plans with the other Heads of Editorial Content. Working as one team over all GQ markets just gives us so much more power to create amazing stories for our audiences. Watch this space!

Two of The New Yorker's contributors were among the honorees: Anand Gopal and Ian Urbina.

The New Yorker wins two Overseas Press Club Awards

The winners of the [Overseas Press Club Awards](https://opcofamerica.org/2021-opc-award-winners/), which recognize excellence in international reporting, have been announced and two of The New Yorker's contributors are among the honorees: Anand Gopal for his report on the rural Afghan women living under Taliban rule and Ian Urbina for his investigation into a shadow immigration system created by the European Union. 

Anand Gopal, a contributing writer, won the O.P.C.’s Ed Cunningham Award, which honors the best magazine-style, long-form narrative feature in print or digital on an international story, for “[The Other Afghan Women](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/09/13/the-other-afghan-women).” The judges said, “A brave and beautifully wrought tale, written with clarity and humanity, that challenges readers to think more broadly about the complicated interlacing of war and women’s rights.” This marks Gopal’s fourth O.P.C Award in the last six years. 

Ian Urbina won the O.P.C.’s Joe and Laurie Dine Award, which honors the best international reporting in any medium dealing with human rights, for “[The Secretive Prisons That Keep Migrants Out of Europe](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/12/06/the-secretive-libyan-prisons-that-keep-migrants-out-of-europe).” The story was reported in collaboration with the Outlaw Ocean Project. The judges said, “At great personal risk, Ian Urbina exposed the horrors of Libyan detention camps where African migrants are held as they attempt to travel to Europe. Through a tacit and unsavory agreement, the European Union essentially pays Libya to catch and imprison the migrants so that Europe does not have to face problems on their borders.”

Additionally, The New Yorker staff writer Raffi Khatchadourian, plus contributors Ben Mauk, Sam Wolson, and Matt Huynh, received the runner-up citation for the Joe and Laurie Dine Award for three distinctive pieces – [a magazine story](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/04/12/surviving-the-crackdown-in-xinjiang), [a documentary in V.R.](https://www.newyorker.com/news/video-dept/reeducated-film-xinjiang-prisoners-china-virtual-reality), and [an interactive feature](https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/china-xinjiang-prison-state-uighur-detention-camps-prisoner-testimony) – that provide a singularly revealing view of how and why the humanitarian crisis in Xinjiang has unfolded.

Inside Glamour U.K.'s female empowerment mission

Deborah Joseph, Glamour’s Deputy Global Editorial Director, is deeply passionate about fighting gender inequality. From bringing men into the conversation about sexism and misogyny, to educating children from a young age about the gender imbalances that exist in all areas of our societies, Joseph believes there is lots of work to be done but there are actions we can do today that will bring about meaningful progression. 

Glamour U.K. is at the forefront of driving these important conversations. We spoke to Joseph about the brand’s [International Women’s Day campaign](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrnzAZPTijs), why misogyny is often internalized by women and the importance of male allyship.

__Tell us about Glamour's “Allyship in the Face of Misogyny” campaign and how it came together.__

Like all of our ideas, the inspiration for our International Women’s Day moving covers campaign came from our morning brainstorm. These are always filled with diverse opinions where the topic of feminism is never far from the conversation. When we sat down to discuss what we should do, male allyship was a common theme that we wanted to explore. We were thinking about where we, as women, find support in times of gender inequality and who we turn to when faced with everyday sexism or misogyny. We thought it could be interesting to ask high-profile feminists to nominate their chosen male ally, opening up a dialogue around the support women need and how men can better provide this. We wanted to bring men into the conversation and make them part of the solution, by showing them how they can be better allies to us. Because men are part of the solution

__Tell us about the four feminists you invited to take part in this project – why were they chosen and what did you learn from them in the process?__

We wanted this piece to platform a range of women across a variety of industries and backgrounds to showcase the universal nature of women’s experiences of misogyny. From influential political activists like Gina Martin and Charlie Craggs – who are committed to fighting gender inequality in their everyday working lives – to high profile women like Rochelle Humes and Leomie Anderson who, although don’t speak about sexism and misogyny for work, have still felt it as women. We wanted to show that the feminist issues we face daily are felt so widely in different contexts and are relatable to every woman. 

__Allyship is a powerful thing. Tell us about what it means to you and why it is so important to Glamour and its audiences.__

I think what we set out to achieve with this is to help men understand how sexism and misogyny make women feel. They don’t know what it’s like for us to feel unsafe walking at night, or to be paid less than our male counterparts for the same work. Even the men we love, who want to support and protect us, can’t always understand what we go through — and that’s something that’s felt universally. So many of us struggle to communicate these fears and frustrations with our partners, friends, brothers or fathers because we don’t have the language - it’s often internalised. 

We want to help women have the courage to find their voice and to share how they feel with the men in their lives, by creating this candid dialogue with our chosen feminists. So we could help women tell men what they need. And help men better understand what’s needed.

__What would you say is the difference between sexism and misogyny?__

Misogyny is often internalised and it’s the system of structural oppression and unconscious bias that comes from living in a patriarchal society. For example, medical misogyny comes from the fact that all research was originally based on men, which trickles down to women’s pain not being fully understood to the fact that airbags in cars were tested on men, resulting in more women dying in accidents. A society built by men for men, creates an environment where women aren’t treated equally. 

Sexism is the way misogyny plays out in everyday life, from language and assumptions about and towards women that hold us back from equality. 

__We still have a long way to go in achieving gender equality. Where do you see Glamour’s role in helping us get there? And will we get there?__

As a mother of two young girls and one boy, I know first hand how important it is to educate children equally from a very young age. Schools have a huge role to play in how all children are socialised, it’s going to take a couple of generations to get to where we need to be as we are fighting thousands of years of misogyny and an entirely systemic patriarchal structure. For example, economists predict it’s going to take over 100 years for the pay gap to close. At Glamour we are working hard to speed up this progress for women in an engaging way.

We have to be better at educating girls on dealing with feminist issues but this should be something that boys learn about too. Just in the same way that we should be teaching young women about managing and talking about money and showing them the opportunities available to them in traditionally male dominated industries like science and engineering. 

__What exciting projects does Glamour have coming up in the months ahead (that you can tell us about!)? __

We are working all year round on activations that raise up women. We are also working on our “Beauty Weekender” event (stay tuned!). It’s always such a fun event, packed with self-care, hair, make-up and conversations around body image and empowerment. We also have some special guests at our content stages covering a range of topics on women’s empowerment.

Digital Coordinator, Editorial Digital at GQ México & Latin America, Paloma Gonzalez shares the life lessons she learned from her four sisters and 10 cousins, chatting with actors Udo Kier and David Dasmaltchian and what she’s most proud of achieving in her career.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

It was kind of a lucky accident. I was working somewhere else and I told one of my friends that I wanted to do something more creative. She had a friend that used to work with her and now was at GQ. They were looking for someone since one of the editors was leaving. She gave me his contact, I called, went to an Interview and something clicked. I didn’t have any experience, but my soon-to-be boss was willing to give me a chance. He asked me to write an article about movie villains, just to see where I was at. I handed it in the next day and three days after that I signed my contract. 

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

I don't really have to describe it, I just mention GQ and most people know what im talking about, usually that is followed by many questions: Do I know any celebrities? Where do I get ideas? And if working for a magazine really is like being in an episode of Sex and the City or The Devil Wears Prada?  

__What does Women's International Day/History Month mean to you?__

I think it should be important for every person, regardless of gender. It's a time in which we can reflect about the role women have had to play in the world, the struggles, obstacles and even the high standards. It’s 2022 and we still have a long way to go, but at least we are having the conversation. 

My family is mainly women, I have 4 sister and about 10 cousins, who have showed me that you have to fight to leave a mark on the world and achieve your goals, this is a time when I recognize them and all the other women that have opened doors, defied the rules and got us to where we are today. 

__Have you seen any trends/news in the industry that you’re excited about and want to explore?__

It’s not exactly a trend, but it’s very interesting to see what creators, musicians, artists and more are achieving by taking control of their own narratives and image. The conversations that are taking place on social media (even when they are not always good), and the possibility to express yourself and share with the world in a way that wasn’t possible just a few years back, especially for minorities. Fashionwise, it's good to see how different tribes establish their identity through clothes, even tanking trends from the past and transforming them into something new (I'm not sure if this is what you asked, but it’s something exciting).  

__What are you most proud of achieving in your career so far?__

Just finding out that writing was something I could do professionally and that other people thought I had something to say was very big to me, but also I have been a part of a great team that has helped GQ México grow and evolve. Going from assistant to Digital Coordinator has been a very interesting journey. 

__Any talent you’ve particularly enjoyed working with?__

I have loved working with everyone I met until now, but getting to talk about horror movies with Udo Kier is definitely a highlight. Also, David Dasmaltchian was a great person to interview (it was a Zoom call and I think he was so open because he loved a painting that was hanging in one of my walls and reminded him of his own house).   

__What do you enjoy doing when you have downtime?__

I'm a runner, so I like to run every day. I also have two Pitbull dogs who demand a lot of attention and want to play all the time. I love a good show, I'm addicted (yes, addicted) to movies and books, and my family has this tradition where we like to go antique shopping (or just looking) on Sundays. 

__When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?__

I have a twin sister and we used to have these conversations about what we would be when we grow up. At one point we decided we wouldn’t do it and created a plan to move to Neverland. That obviously didn’t work, so I decided to be a doctor instead until I found out that the sight of blood made me faint. Art has always been important in my family, so my sister became a painter and photography and writing became part of who I am.  

__What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?__

So many, but two come to mind. The first is Nothing to See Here by Kevin Willson (about children who catch fire, family secrets and political scandals), and the second is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, which I read after I watched the HBO show (this is a book that needs to be shared). 

__You’re at a make-your-own sundae bar. Which toppings do you choose?__

I don’t think ice cream should have a topping (it’s good on its own), but if I had to choose, I guess it would be something crunchy to add texture.

#WeAreCondeNast: Ashton McGown – Production Finance Coordinator

This week, Production Finance Coordinator Ashton McGown shares his career journey, his goals as co-chair of the NOIR ERG and where he gets his inspiration.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__ 

I made my way to Condé Nast in the fall of 2019, which has been one of the highlights of my professional journey in NYC. I grew up in Nacogdoches, TX, a relatively small town that is considered the oldest town in the state. Thankfully, having the opportunity to travel to NYC in my youth added breadth to my understanding of what was and is possible. 

I did not necessarily take a traditional path to end up at one of the leading media companies in the world. Honestly, through blunders and my insatiable curiosity, I continued to search for ways to leverage what I’d done professionally and channeled that into seeking opportunities in companies whose work centers around my personal interests. I did not have a clear-cut path to getting here but it made for opportunities to learn and experience far more than I could have imagined.

In many ways, I still consider myself to just be getting started and scratching the surface of where my career will lead me. I’m still a dreamer and approach life this way. Dreaming has sustained me in phases of my life when I wasn’t sure of where to start - the Universe continues to surprise me. The opportunity to work at Condé in any capacity is truly one of my dreams fulfilled.

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

Well, most of my friends are familiar with Condé’s brands and CNE’s content. My family, on the other hand, are from a small town so I have to take an entirely different approach, haha.  

I start with the brands they are familiar with: Vogue, GQ, The New Yorker, AD, Vanity Fair, etc. and explain to them how those brands and others make up Condé Nast. In terms of my role in the company, I tell them I work for the finance team and they don’t ask too many more questions, thankfully haha. I appreciate their excitement and encouragement - they’ve allowed me to be creative and have put up with my long-winded, detailed, explanations of fashion and media for years. They are happy that I finally work in proximity to my interests. 

__You were recently named co-chair of the NOIR ERG. What are your goals for the year?__ 

The other NOIR co-chairs and myself have some really exciting programming and events in the works for this year and for Black History Month. In terms of broad goals, I’d like to collaborate with several of the other amazing ERGs. Also, I’d like to see members of other ERGs involved with NOIR programming -— there is a lot of overlap in the goals of each ERG. While NOIR advocates for the advancement of Black voices within the company, we also have varied interests and identities that are reflective of the other groups and their focus areas. 

__Can you share a personal reflection on Black History Month?__ 

I recently read Roxane Gay’s essay “The Price of Black Ambition.” I’d like to share a few lines that deeply resonated with me and that concisely capture the essence of how I feel about Black History Month. 

“Black History Month is important and a corrective to so much of America’s fraught racial history. But in the twenty-first century, this relegating of black ambition to one month of recognition feels constraining and limiting...” 

__What do you think is the most profound moment from African-American history in the U.S.?__ 

African-American history can not be reduced to a singular profound moment but exists as a continuum. This history is not secondary to the American story but a complex, far-reaching and integral part of this country’s narrative. Black history is actively being rewritten and redefined in a way that explores the counter-narratives to the profound moments from within the Black experience. Black history has mostly been taught through a paradigm of oppression and liberation but is far more intricate. There are innumerable profound moments beyond what we have been taught are the most significant. 

__Who or what is your biggest inspiration?__ 

As a more “right-brained” thinker, I am constantly seeking sources of inspiration. I love to read memoirs and the bios of individuals who have carved out their own paths or made room for themselves in their areas of expertise. We all love a good success story where someone achieves a lot with seemingly little, has humble beginnings, or does amazing things in their youth. 

Personally, I’m most inspired by the visionaries who started later in life, the misfits, those who are often underestimated, those who had to start over entirely or had to go about their goals in creative ways. These people are often misunderstood, but they bet on themselves in a mighty way. Having the courage to reinvent yourself and to sacrifice the comfort of the familiar is often unexplainably difficult but it yields amazing returns. 

__What is something you have always wanted to do but haven’t done yet?__

I have always wanted to attend one of the many fashion shows that make up New York, London, Milan and Paris’ fashion weeks. I know these events are more about work than pleasure but I’m sure the energy in the venues and the creative buzz is truly exhilarating. 

__You can invite three people (dead or alive) to a dinner party you’re throwing, who would you invite and why? And bonus question, what are you serving?__ 

James Baldwin, André Leon Talley, and fashion designer Willi Smith. I think this list of attendees and why I would invite them speaks for itself. The wisdom, the reads, the lessons learned, the experiences, the travels, the fashion, did I mention the reads?  I’d want to hear about it all. They were fabulous and far ahead of their times. Perhaps far ahead of our current times. French cuisine is clearly the right answer here. This menu has to be an impeccable culinary excellence. The finest champagne, of course. I’d have to enlist a Michelin-starred chef. The real question is where I’m going to get the budget for this dinner? We’d clearly need a well-known photographer to document too; I’m thinking Tyler Mitchell would be the most appropriate…but again, budget!! 

__What book/album/film do you think everyone should read/listen/watch at least once in their lifetime?__ 

Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants really spoke to me when I needed it most. I read it right before moving to NYC — I should probably revisit. 

__If you didn't have to sleep, how would you spend the extra eight hours each day?__

In addition to working at Condé I’m an MBA student — so I’d most definitely be studying!

The film tells the story of Syrian-born architect and artist Mohamad Hafez who uses found objects to make models of Damascus. Also at the award show, investigative reporter and contributing writer Ronan Farrow won the Truth to Power Award.

Earlier this month, The New Yorker also received two Academy Award nominations. 

"[Affairs of the Art](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/screening-room/an-illustrated-family-of-obsessives)" and "On My Mind," a pair of short films released by The New Yorker, have been nominated for Academy Awards, joining feature-length nominees that included "The Power of the Dog," "West Side Story," and "Belfast."

Nominated in the Best Animated Short category, “Affairs of the Art,” directed by Joanna Quinn and Les Mills, presents an off-kilter, warm-hearted glimpse into a family of eccentrics. Beryl, a Welsh housewife and the film’s energetic narrator, is “drinking from the cup of creativity” as she shares her interest in drawing and recounts the parallel obsessions of many of her family members, who transform their own passions—toy trains, pet pigeons, revenge—into art through the power of their attention. Quinn and Mills have been making films about Beryl since 1987—“Affairs of the Art” is the fourth—and both won Emmys, in 1999, for their work on an animated adaptation of “The Canterbury Tales.” Quinn’s work has been nominated for an Academy Award once before, for the 1996 animated short film “Famous Fred.”

“On My Mind,” written and directed by the Danish filmmaker Martin Strange-Hansen, is nominated in the Best Live Action Short category and unfolds in a nearly deserted bar, where a man asks to perform a karaoke song with deeply personal meaning. “On My Mind” will début on newyorker.com later this year, and marks the second Academy Award nomination for Strange-Hansen, who won in the same category, in 2003, for the film “This Charming Man.”

We spoke to Glamour Mexico and Latin America’s Head of Editorial Content, Farah Slim about how the issue came together and she shared the secrets behind the huge success the brand has had with its ever-popular horoscopes vertical.

__Tell us about your new International Women's Day issue. How did it come together?__ 

During the month of March, we wanted to make a special cover to celebrate Women's History Month. Therefore we invited three amazing women to star on our cover: Carla Morrison, Coty Camacho and Hadassah Tirosh. In the interview, they told us what being a woman means to them, how they celebrate International Women's Day and which women inspire them to continue building success stories.

__This year Glamour Mexico will celebrate its first “Women of the Year” – a huge milestone moment for your brand! Tell us about that.__

Yes, this year we will celebrate for the first time in our market “Women of the Year” to celebrate the women who this year, with their projects, have inspired the world. We’re very excited.

__At Glamour Mexico, you are paving the way with horoscopes and astrological content, with your dedicated horoscopes vertical. How Glamour Mexico started creating this kind of content?__

Our [horoscopes vertical](https://www.glamour.mx/tags/horoscopos) has always existed in Glamour.mx (since the moment the site was born) and the reason why is that for many people in Mexico and Latin America, astrology content is really important. With this content we seek to inform, entertain and inspire our audiences by giving them the best relationship tips for each sign, upcoming astrological events and how to empower themselves through their zodiac sign.

__Horoscopes content always performs so well and is so popular. Why do you think this is?__

We used to just publish weekly horoscopes but in 2019 we started planning more astrological content, connecting astrology with fashion, beauty, lifestyle, entertainment, love and sex. That was when the big success began. 

__What is your strategy behind horoscope and astrological content?__

Our 2022 strategy for horoscopes is to expand the vertical even more, exploring new areas like tarot, numerology, rituals and also creating new astrology articles based on the main topics of each month. For example, during Women’s Month we will work on some special articles like: the best women qualities according to their zodiac sign and astrological tips on how to become an even more powerful woman.

__Can you share any tips or secrets to the success of horoscope content that might help our other brands?__

Our advice would be to have an expert (an astrologist) writing most of your content. Also I would say that brands should create astrological content based on your most successful vertical (e.g. beauty, celebrities, fashion, etc) so you can link both sections and double the opportunities to succeed. In astrology, timing is really important too. Some of the best things you can do is to write predictions before the astrological event is going to happen. For example, we published 2022 horoscopes for each zodiac sign on December 1st, and this was a big success during the first days of January 2022.

__Relationship advice is also a core content strength of Glamour Mexico. Tell us about your February love-themed issue and what the response has been like from your audiences?__  

During February we had a [special cover story on Valentine's Day, starring actress Emeraude Toubias](https://www.glamour.mx/articulos/emeraude-toubia-portada-glamour-mexico-ylatinoamerica-san-valentin-2022). In the interview she shared with us how she loves love and how important self-love is to first fall in love with ourselves and find love in everything we do. We also developed a multi-platform content strategy to reach all our audiences, emphasizing self-love in each of our articles. 

__Tell us about Glamour Mexico’s “[Green Glam](https://www.glamour.mx/tags/sustentabilidad)” vertical and how the idea for this came about?__

“[Green Glam](https://www.glamour.mx/tags/sustentabilidad)” came from the need to talk about current sustainability issues from a simple, informative and practical approach to the lifestyle of our consumers. In this vertical we answer and inquire about the basics of sustainability in fashion, beauty and relationships, as well as deeper topics about current ingredients, methods and processes. This focus engages with our strongest audiences interested in the most ethical and fair processes with the environment, which are millennials and Gen Z. 

__What exciting new projects and initiatives can we expect to see from the brand in the coming months?__

In the following months we will continue to develop special beauty content, which is one of our strongest verticals, also during Pride Month we will have several surprises. And in May we will have "[Glam Camp](https://www.glamour.mx/tags/ejercicio-y-bienestar)" which is a wellness event where we will have several experiences to continue taking care of our wellbeing and see exercise as a tool that helps us improve our mental – as well as physical – health. This week, Soyini Driskell, Executive Director, Editorial Initiatives at Allure, shares why young talent today should start by being “generalists,” why she's referred to as Allure's "future person" and her preference for work attire.

"I own a pair of navy blue sequined pants – need I say more?" she says.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

I almost never found my way here, or to media in general! I interned in the fashion closet at Seventeen, was an assistant at Altuzarra, and spent four years at rag & bone — I was certain I was going to stay in fashion forever. But I was asked to fill in on a freelance writing job and, through that, fell back in love with writing and storytelling. Freelancing turned into working at Bullett Magazine and later becoming the digital director of Galore, both amazing places to cut your teeth in digital, until I found my way to CN. 

I joined our branded content studio team — then called 23 Stories before becoming CNX — and after four years on revenue and two on Allure edit, CN and I have recently celebrated our iron anniversary. I’ve grown *exponentially* through my work here and have learned from some of the best to ever do it; there is truly no other place like it.

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

My EIC calls me Allure’s future person. What that means is when it comes to new platforms or innovative spaces for the brand – like The Allure Store, audio, branded content, livestream shopping, events and experiences, or partnerships, as examples – I’m who makes it happen. Every project is different but I’m almost always working across multiple teams to make our ideas a reality: coming up with a concept, helping to secure sponsorship dollars, figuring out production support, setting a promo plan and everything in between. A bit of project management + a heavy dose of creativity and brand acumen + a gift for teamwork + a lot of fast-talking and persuasiveness = me, everyday.     

__Black History Month just wrapped up, can you share a personal reflection on what the month means to you?__

Beneath the many ways it has become a commodity or a 28-day opportunity for virtue-signaling, what astounds me about this month-long celebration is that, in its current state, BHM is less than 50 years old. Before 1976, Negro History Weeks across the US were how we celebrated the contributions and legacies of Black Americans in the US, which then extended to other parts of the world. Is it possible that, 50 years from now, the next generations will know a world where Black history is so integrated into our overall history curriculum that BHM will become BHAY (Black History All Year)? A girl can dream.

__What does Women's History Month mean to you?__ 

Much like Black history month before it, March is when I take stock of women's history happening in real time around us. The current fights for reproductive and racial justice, equitable pay, and voting rights, among others, will join the history books alongside the progress movements of the 60's and 70's. Women's history month is a moment to mark the work of amazing women before me and use it as inspiration to keep going. 

__What advice would you give to young talent just starting out in their careers?__

There is no such thing as a specialist in our industry anymore. Start as a generalist who knows a little about a handful of things and then, over time, work to refine your skill set into 2-3 areas of expertise/interest. If you're a writer, be writer who is also good on social; if you're an editor, be an editor who also curates events and cultural programming; if you're a video creative, be a creative who can pitch sellable ideas to clients. All of the things – audience behavior, algorithms, revenue streams, social platforms, cultural values, consumer habits – are changing too quickly to be just one thing anymore and it drastically cuts down on your value. 

__Professional, casual, or sweatpants? If there wasn’t a dress code, how would you dress for work?__ 

I own a pair of navy blue sequined pants – need I say more? 

__If you could take a month to travel anywhere, where would you go?__ 

One week in Jamaica, one week in Belize, another week in Guadeloupe, and the last week recovering in a wellness spa in Costa Rica.   

__What is one non-work-related goal that you would like to achieve in the next five years?__ 

I'm buying a home within the next five years!

__What is the best book you have read so far this year?__ 

I've been in a Neil Gaiman bag for the past few months so it’s either Stardust (which was turned into an absurdly-wacky-yet-cute movie) or American Gods.

__Best sandwich ever. What's on it?__

Hmmm…toss-up between a sardine sandwich OR mozzarella, tomato, pesto, and avocado.

Hamish Bowles unveils his first issue of The World of Interiors

Today, Hamish Bowles unveils his first issue of The World of Interiors as the brand's new Editor-in-Chief.

Bowles is only the third editor in the brand's 41-year history. 

He spoke to [The New York Times' Steven Kurutz](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/03/fashion/hamish-bowles-world-of-interiors.html) about his plans for the brand, his passion for interiors and the brand's digital expansion. 

"At The World of Interiors, suddenly it is the *world* of interiors," Bowles told The New York Times in an interview. "This extraordinary breadth of subject matter and material is opened up. That's the DNA. You turn a page — or click a mouse — and you're in a totally different world."

Speaking of the digital expansion of the brand, Bowles said how digital content will be rolled out in a robust way in the fall. The website has already had a makeover, and the brand is launching a weekly email newsletter this month. "I could see podcasts with pillars of the magazine and interesting voices from the world of culture and design," he added, "and videos as a way of amplifying print images of an environment."

Condé Nast's Global Chief Content Officer, Anna Wintour, told The New York Times: "Only an editor with Hamish’s grounding in the history of design, the arts, architecture and fashion could lead World of Interiors...We are all looking forward to him bringing his verve and attitude to WOI's social channels and digital projects."

Kurtuz, reporting on the issue, wrote: "If the April issue is any indication, readers need not worry that Mr. Bowles will muck it up. The story mix, which includes features on 1960s tropical modernism in Lagos; a fashion designer’s Bloomsbury townhouse; a gorgeous Genoese palazzo lovingly restored; and a pictorial celebrating wild garlic — is as eclectic and sumptuous as ever."

Inside Vanity Fair Spain's mental health special issue

In Spain, anxiety affects six percent of the population over the age of 15. This alarming statistic is what led Alberto Moreno, Vanity Fair Spain’s Head of Editorial Content, on a journey to create a special issue dedicated to mental health. 

The pandemic broke down many taboos and stigmas around mental health, and made 2022 the year we realized that we weren’t alone. However, for [Vanity Fair Spain’s March issue](https://www.revistavanityfair.es/articulos/numero-marzo-salud-mental-portada-contenidos), Moreno and his team wanted to show that there is still a long way to go in tackling the mental health crisis. 

From breaking down stigmas around suicide to hearing first hand experiences of depression, the issue explores how we can come together to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing our world today.

We spoke to Moreno about the success of the issue, the response it has received from the brand’s audience and the new special issues we can expect in the coming months.

__Congratulations on your brilliant new [mental health special issue](https://www.revistavanityfair.es/articulos/numero-marzo-salud-mental-portada-contenidos). Tell us about how the issue came together?__

The idea of doing a special issue came from an editorial meeting in which we were looking for a theme that would be the backbone of the March issue. Being one of the main concerns of the newsroom, we thought if we had something to contribute from the point of view of Vanity Fair, with our tools and our approaches. 

Vanity Fair is about characters, so we went through the national and international scene and looked at who we would like to be our protagonists. From there we began with a process of interviews (about 30) that led us to raise a main theme and three complementary ones about facing social problems, how it affects young people, how it is addressed in Spanish politics and how social networks can aggravate the problem, if not used correctly.

__Tell us about the emphasis you place on anxiety in this issue?__

The pandemic has been the main trigger for anxiety. In Spain, six percent of the population, over the age of 15, suffer from anxiety, according to the latest [European Health Survey](https://ec.europa.eu/health/system/files/2020-12/2020_healthatglance_rep_en_0.pdf). Before the first major severe confinement in lockdown, people faced these problems alone or with a certain amount of shame because they were stigmatized, but perhaps with Simone Biles' confession at the Tokyo Olympics, a Pandora's box was opened that we hope will never close again. People in the public eye often become examples for us that we’re not alone in the world. If bad things happen to them with their privileges, then no one is free, so the conversation becomes a healthy one. I hope that the fact that up to 25 famous faces volunteered to tell us in this issue that there are times when they have needed help, can be a vehicle for others to lose their shame or prejudice.

__Suicide is an incredibly difficult topic to discuss. How did you tackle that in this issue?__

All the interviewees tried to approach this subject with the greatest of naturalness and realism. Suicide is a harsh reality and possibility that unfortunately surfaces on occasions when we are affected by mental health. The fact that for many years it has been treated as a taboo in Spain and in a large number of countries has prevented us from realizing the seriousness of the problem. For this reason, we believe that its normalization does not have to generate a pull effect, but rather the assumption that it is a real problem that deserves public and state attention in order to tackle it as best as possible.

__Why did you decide to do an illustrated cover for this issue?__

The fact that we put a famous personality talking about their conditions was not going to be as striking as if we put an illustration in which we could all feel like protagonists. Sometimes the characters are not to everyone's taste and are polarizing, so we had to be very clear that a blank canvas could encompass our entire audience. That theoretical head is all heads. For its execution, we chose Javier Jaén – one of the most talented Spanish illustrators on the international scene right now. His recent work for the [poster for Pedro Almodóvar's film “Parallel Mothers”](https://posteritati.com/poster/51703/parallel-mothers-2021-spanish-b1-poster) gave us the idea that he is someone of great sensitivity and with an enormous ability for generating iconic images.

__What has the response been like to the issue from your audience so far?__

The response from the audience on social networks, which is what we can measure at the moment as we haven't uploaded all the content yet, has been tremendously inspiring and we are very grateful. The messages of affection have followed one another, especially those who thanked us for addressing "such a necessary topic." We imagined that a punctual change in our aesthetics could disconcert some of our audience members, but we have not received a single message like this. Instead, we have received many very exciting private messages that show that as well as making an entertaining issue, we can sometimes be vectors of real change too.

__What are your upcoming plans for Vanity Fair Spain that you can tell us about?__

The way we have had to work on this number has been exemplary, but we have not invented any processes. For three years we have been working on thematic issues that concern us in society. In June we are releasing a special issue about the preservation of the environment, and in July, we are dedicating a special issue to diversity, transmedia and physical experiences. As always, we call for the participation and mobilization of our readers.

Hamish Bowles appointed Editor in Chief of The World of Interiors

Condé Nast today named Hamish Bowles as the new editor in chief at The World of Interiors. 

Bowles brings with him over 25 years of experience at American Vogue on the senior editorial team, where he is currently global editor at large overseeing all house and garden features, contributing profiles of cultural figures, as well as reporting on the history of fashion and style. Bowles also hosts two podcasts —the completed In Vogue: The 1990s and ongoing In Vogue: The 2000s and narrates Vogue’s popular Youtube series Everything You Need to Know.

Born in London, Bowles studied fashion and journalism at Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design. Prior to joining American Vogue as Style Editor in 1992, Bowles began his career at London’s Harpers & Queen magazine. Bowles is recognised as one of the world’s most respected authorities in fashion and interior design and has written for and contributed countless articles, reviews, and books on fashion history, art, lifestyle, and interior design. His books include Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years (2001); Balenciaga: Spanish Master (2010); Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People (2007) and The World in Vogue: People, Parties, Places (2009).

In his expanded role, Bowles will lead The World of Interiors’ editorial team into a new era that honours the magazine’s timeless heritage while expanding its influence and reach to audiences across digital and video. Bowles will succeed Rupert Thomas, after 22 successful years at the helm, and will be only the third editor in chief in the magazine’s 40 year history. The World of Interiors was originally founded in 1981 by Kevin Kelly’s company Pharos Publications under the title Interiors. Kelly appointed Min Hogg as the publication’s first editor, after she replied to an advertisement placed in the Times. Renamed The World of Interiors shortly before it first went to print, the magazine filled a gap in the market which it continues to define - producing its original, discerning content assures the magazine international acclaim, cementing its position as one of the foremost design and decoration titles in the world. In 1982, Condé Nast bought a 50% stake in the magazine, before taking over as its publisher in 1991. Today the magazine has an iconic status, acknowledged as the ultimate authority on design bringing together exceptional interiors and decorative arts.

Anna Wintour: “I’m so thrilled by this new role for Hamish, who has an uncanny ability to pop up everywhere at once—and accomplish anything you ask of him along the way, with style, intelligence, and wit. He is a brilliant writer, an expert editor, and a tireless globetrotter—I’ve long called him the original multitasker—who carries with him a wonderful mix of curiosity, erudition and enthusiasm. Hamish is also, of course, an expert design and fashion historian, and I can’t imagine a better person to take over The World of Interiors. Vogue Arabia celebrates its fifth anniversary

This week, Product and Activation Director Jaleel Brown shares how his parents were integral to his understanding and appreciation of black history, the best piece of advice he’s ever received and how he’d win Naked and Afraid.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

I like to think of myself as many things, but most people would say I love fashion, design, plants, sunlight, and health & wellness. Last year I started calling myself a triathlete and in November completed my first Half Ironman Race (with many more to come). 

Ever since 2015 I knew I wanted to work at Condé Nast — the blend of my interests, Condé’s portfolio, and the robust, scrappy environment I had heard of seemed like a perfect match. In 2019 I finally received an opportunity to work here and made the leap. In previous roles I’ve worked at  Adobe, Meredith, and OMD — each sharing a common thread of developing client relationships, with a keen focus on driving strategic initiatives, and executing large-scale media programs.

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

Honestly, I just say I’m in Marketing and they pretend to know what I mean.

__You were recently named co-chair of the NOIR ERG. What are your goals for the year?__ 

The ultimate goal is to create, source, and drive meaningful and impactful programming for black employees and also anyone else who’s interested in learning, engaging with, and supporting our community.

__Can you share a personal reflection on Black History Month?__ 

My parents worked incredibly hard to keep me educated on Black History, defining moments, key figures and the progress that has led us to where we are today. When I was a youth, they made me read African American Encyclopedias — I didn’t grasp the importance then, but I now see how that has shaped my values and ultimately who I am today.

All of my school projects, summer reading, and book reports growing up had a pro-black focus. With my family consistently cherishing our rich heritage, every month felt like Black History Month. 

__What do you think is the most profound moment from African-American history in the U.S.?__ 

Emmit Till's mother had the strength and fortitude to have an open-casket funeral, which was the spark that ignited the Civil Rights Movement.

__What would be the first thing you'd do if you won the lottery?__

If I’m feeling responsible that day, I’d call a wealth manager. If I want to ball out I’d take my girlfriend, family, and friends on an all-expense-paid week-long trip to Mykonos. 

__What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?__

Self-discipline is the key to success.

__If you could do anything, besides what you're doing now, what would you do?__

Interior designer.

__What website or app doesn’t exist, but you really wish it did?__

A pancake rating app for every breakfast/brunch restaurant

__If you had to spend 100 days on a desert alone, what three things would you take with you and why?__

A machete, fire starter, and mosquito net. I binge-watched 10 seasons of Naked and Afraid and found these to be the most effective among all the participants. At this point, I’m convinced I would survive, but it’s easy to say that from the couch LOL.

Bon Appétit and Epicurious' Dawn Davis shares the secrets to her success

Dawn Davis, the Editor-in-Chief of Bon Appétit and Epicurious, spoke to [The Cut](https://www.thecut.com/2022/02/how-dawn-davis-gets-it-done.html) about how she juggles life and gets everything done – from managing a big team to being a working mom. 

"I firmly believe you need the time to regenerate and to be creative. You need some downtime; that’s where the ideas come from," Davis told [The Cut](https://www.thecut.com/2022/02/how-dawn-davis-gets-it-done.html).

On her work, Davis said: "I run two brands, Epicurious and Bon Appétit. We have print for Bon Appétit as well as video and digital and podcasts, and Epicurious is video and digital. At any moment, one of these initiatives will have something that is a priority. I have a great team that helps me prioritize. At the end of every day, my assistant and I will go over the to-do list and figure out what things we can cross off and what things we need to carry on to the next day."

On how she engages with her team and the importance of dedicating time to them, she said: "I like to have time on the calendar when people can see me on the immediate team. We call those my “office hours,” and that’s always free every day for half an hour. We also try to book at least an hour where I’m not responding to email and am actually generating ideas. Then we try to keep Fridays as a time when I can listen to outside pitches and outside collaborators. It’s important because otherwise we can get in a loop of responding to each other."

On what brings her joy in her role, Davis said: "I love it when I hear that the content is resonating whether that’s a recipe or perspective on food or even a travel story. Or when people say, “Oh, I ate there. That restaurant was perfect.” I feel like we are doing what we set out to do, which is to be a trustworthy source for information around food recipes and people in the restaurant industry."

Inside Glamour Spain's Video Strategy

Last year, Glamour Spain’s video views on YouTube jumped by a huge 35%. In 2022, the team has ambitious plans for growing this number even further. Fresh off the huge success of their new fashion film – "Los (Des)propósitos" – which has already had over 2.5M views (and counting), we caught up with Marcos Chamizo, Head of Programming and Development at CNE Spain, and María Mérida, Glamour Spain’s Senior Editor, to find out the secrets behind their success. 

Here, the duo take us inside their super successful video strategy, share their thoughts on how best to work with social media platforms, and they even let us in on what makes a video go viral.

__Congratulations on the launch of Glamour Spain's new fashion film "Los (Des)propósitos.” How did this project come together?__

__María Mérida:__ We wanted to release a fashion film that people could relate to, which somehow connected with how people are feeling right now. I think this really is the key to making a video go viral. So we thought about New Year’s resolutions and how frustrating it is being so far from achieving them just a month or two after Christmas. That was the main idea behind the film.

__Marcos Chamizo:__ We worked with the team that helped Glamour bring to life Familia Glamour – a series of minifilms starring Najwa Nimri (from Netflix’s hit show Money Heist) that developed this idea of the love/hate relationship between family members. “Los (Des)propósitos” with Clare Galle (the star of huge spanish Netflix show “A Través de mi Ventana”) maintains the same humoristic tone of the first series, but with a more refined aesthetic. 

__Tell us about some of the success Glamour Spain has had recently in terms of video? What is your video strategy for the brand over the year ahead?__ 

__MC:__ Glamour Spain experienced a +35% year-over-year Youtube growth in 2021 – but also a +219% year-over-year Instagram growth, and we're hoping for an even bigger jump in 2022. Our main goals for the first half of the year are diversifying our current slate of series, with new originals that will appear from February on (like Close Friends, our first premiere of the year), but also developing expert-led originals that reduce our dependence on celebrity bookings and fill the voids on our programming on some verticals (such as fashion and shopping). 

__Glamour Spain has lots of amazing video content on its social media platforms. How does social media play a part in your video strategy?__

__MM:__ It is essential. I think it was Quentin Tarantino who said recently that it's never been easier to make films, but that all that magic is happening on social media. It is the space where people want to see new formats, new ideas, and it's also the best place to keep the conversation alive. And that conversation helps to develop our brand's identity better than anything else.

__MC:__ Then you add TikTok to the mix too! We launched Glamour España's TikTok account just a couple months ago and it already has a huge following and is also driving big viewer numbers. For us, social media is also a pool where we can find new interesting talent opportunities with an already-established audience, and they are much easier to reach out to than major celebrities.

__The Glamour TV section of glamour.es is a great video archive of treasures. How did the idea to create this come from and what have you learned about your content from having this platform?__

__MM:__ Absolutely! We really wanted to create our own archive of treasures. We've been working really hard on Glamour's identity as a brand and video has been really important in this process. Our audience loves our videos so it's essential that they can find them easily. It is as important as having a fashion or beauty section to the site.

__There is no doubt that video is more in demand than ever before. What are the challenges you face in your roles?__

__MM:__ In terms of creativity, we are constantly trying to find new formats and keep working on new ideas to release films that people will love to share. That's the one word our team always has in mind – "share.” In order to do this, it's very important that we can find actors/celebrities that people love to watch and develop an idea that seems fresh and new.

__MC:__ One of the main creative challenges we have right now at Glamour Spain is how to maintain low-lift production, while developing more sophisticated originals. While we're still producing the junket-style series that have been bringing a big audience to the brand, we now want to offer our audience more complex ideas.

Condé Nast is leading the green revolution, writes FIPP

Condé Nast's Senior Policy Advisor, Alice Pilia, spoke to [FIPP](https://www.fipp.com/news/leading-the-green-revolution-lessons-from-conde-nasts-push-for-greater-sustainability/#) about leading a green revolution in publishing. 

Pilia discussed the successes and progress made in our sustainability efforts so far, the importance of acting now and why she hopes Condé Nast is setting an example to others.

In May 2020, as the first peak of the Covid-19 pandemic was raging around the world, Condé Nast set out its [sustainability targets](https://www.condenast.com/sustainability) for the next five years. 

"A lot of media companies would have said, 'we'll wait until this mess has gone away and then we'll tackle sustainability. But at Condé Nast we were determined that this was something that needed to be done. The fact that we could launch a strategy in the middle of the pandemic made me proud and very optimistic about the company's ability to deliver a long-term commitment," Pilia, who chairs our Global Employee Sustainability Council, told [FIPP in an interview](https://www.fipp.com/news/leading-the-green-revolution-lessons-from-conde-nasts-push-for-greater-sustainability/#).

Condé Nast's five-year Sustainability Strategy – part of a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 – has seen our offices in London, Germany, Italy and Spain move to 100% renewable energy as the media group looks to make a global switch to clean energy by 2025.

We have also eliminated 82% of its single-use plastic as it completely phases out the harmful material, while, in January last year, 100% of the paper in our print magazine titles were internationally certified as ‘sustainable’.

"We have a unique role. We inspire, inform and engage people in a way that other sectors hardly do," Pilia said in the [interview](https://www.fipp.com/news/leading-the-green-revolution-lessons-from-conde-nasts-push-for-greater-sustainability/#).

“One of the pillars of our sustainability strategy is to become a voice for change and that is what every media company should aim to do. It's an additional moral responsibility and about the trust and bond that we have with our stakeholders. We can't ignore it."

On the topic of greenwashing, and how companies may not be viewing the climate crisis as urgently as they should be, Pilia said: " At the corporate level, for some groups, it might be hard to convince shareholders and boards that sustainability is something they need to tackle urgently. When this happens you have to make sure the energy that is being created by the workforce and readership is channelled to persuade the leadership. It requires resources, time and commitment."

As well as creating content on the platform, Condé Nast and TikTok have also collaborated on four-page print inserts in the March issues of GQ and Vogue, on newsstands now.

Condé Nast partners with TikTok

Conde Nast brands Vogue and GQ will make content exclusively for TikTok, both for their own respective brand channels and in print.

The deal includes a variety of content formats — mostly around Fashion Month, as well as style and shopping — such as live streams, hashtag challenges and short-form video series produced by Condé Nast’s editorial teams and social content creators.

The deal took effect earlier this month when Condé Nast began posting content to GQ’s and Vogue’s TikTok channels to coincide with Fashion Month. Both companies said branded content deals are under development and did not name confirmed partners.

Having launched their respective TikTok channels in late 2020, GQ and Vogue (which have amassed more than 410,000 and 675,000 followers, respectively), are taking TikTok viewers behind the scenes and backstage for Fashion Month, featuring editors, models and attendees. Vogue and GQ editors will also host live streams discussing notable moments on the runway from the back of their cabs, with opportunities for surprise guest appearances.

The brands are also producing video series for their TikTok channels. Vogue’s video series will include “Make It Vogue,” which will feature one new creator every month recreating a fashion trend with their own style, as well as “The Get,” which will bring Vogue’s shopping guide franchise to TikTok with editor product picks and styling tips. GQ’s video series will include “GQ Best New Menswear,” where GQ writers and editors will highlight the new styles that viewers should add to their closets, and “Personal Practice,” a @GQSports show featuring athletes’ wellness practices, among other shows.

GQ and Vogue will also have style and body positivity hashtag challenges, encouraging participation from TikTok users. Vogue’s first hashtag challenge on TikTok, #MakeItVogue, which invited users to share their own take on the classic bustle, has generated more than 3.6 billion views to date, according to Sarma.

Condé Nast and TikTok have also collaborated on four-page print inserts in the March issues of GQ and Vogue, on newsstands now. The inserts contain 18 perforated cards that readers can tear out and clip together to create a flipbook animation tied to the titles’ respective social video challenges on TikTok. The GQ one features singer-songwriter Conan Gray and the Vogue flipbook stars model and Muay Thai fighter Mia Kang.

Our collective vision for the future: A letter from Condé Nast’s global editorial leads and deputies

As the editors who have been working on our company’s global transition, we want to thank all of you who have lent your efforts towards making this happen — we so appreciate what you’ve done. We would now like to share some thoughts about what we’ve seen and why we think this new way of working together is so important and, in the end, so necessary for producing great, ambitious storytelling.

The goal, in short, is modernization — to be a more 21st-century media company, and a more community-minded one as well. We’ve already made the shift from a legacy magazine publisher to a multiplatform digitally led media company — but we now want to be even more agile, and more open and connected in our thinking. To be sure, our titles have long had global reach, and a global readership, but now we want to shift our way of working to reflect that — to be as global as the audiences we’re attracting. Curiosity and creativity is driving us as much as any business strategy. We believe that community and connectedness — a kind of transparency and unity of purpose — will inspire the best ideas.

This isn’t new thinking, exactly. As editors, we know that our success comes from looking outward as much as inward and we have long been aware of that global audience we mentioned. We know that all of us, all our readers and audiences and commercial partners, live in the world — not in discreet markets. The people we’re reaching and engaging and talking to are connected. A reader in Paris is connected to a podcast listener in Mumbai, who is connected to a consumer of our videos in Brooklyn. Everyone is curious about everything happening everywhere, and as editors we have to be too. A media company has to respond to a globalized world, and reflect it back. We also know that when we talk to our colleagues across oceans and borders our authority grows, as does our wellspring of ideas. Authority and creativity come from being global.

We also know where we’ve been. We used to work in silos, tending to our individual titles, and often competing with each other. Competition can be fun — the thrill of a scoop, the big get — but ultimately it’s self — defeating. Coming together has already shown us that a new way of working can actually mean bigger gets, bigger scoops and more groundbreaking storytelling. Many of us have seen the benefit of transparency and connectedness already by speaking openly with our colleagues across titles and countries. These exchanges with counterparts in the U.K. and China and Japan and elsewhere bring new ideas and new thinking almost immediately. It’s like opening a window, stepping through an open door.

We also need to ensure that print continues to be vibrant and innovative. As much as we are all working in a digitally minded way — and making investments in digital and video content — print remains such an important part of our history, our present and our future. We all know print is just one way to tell stories, but it’s often a prized one for talent, and we know that it prompts conversation, engagement and interest. Working together globally and collaborating on stories that can speak to global audiences will help us innovate with print and maintain it as a critical part of what we do. 

Finally, this pandemic year has taught some hard lessons, but some positive ones too. One lesson is that we can be more decentralized, more democratic, open to more voices than we’ve been in the past. I’m sure you all have experienced this on Zoom. We all miss the magic of in-person collaboration and we will get back to that, but we also know that when you are all crowded on one screen together there’s a kind of leveling at work. Inclusiveness and openness — a move away from strict hierarchies — help drive creative thinking and we’ve seen that this year in an exciting way.

Lastly, we want to emphasize that local stories will also be at the center of everything we do. Specificity creates relevance and journalism is about what’s happening on the ground. Local stories and global stories are two sides of the same coin. We do both and we can do them stronger through collaboration. We can’t wait to begin working with all of you in this new way.

The New Yorker wins two Polk Awards

The Wall Street Journal reports on how Condé Nast turned a profit last year.

Condé Nast's CEO Roger Lynch said in [an interview with the Wall Street Journal](https://www.wsj.com/articles/magazine-giant-conde-nast-posts-first-profit-in-years-11645117633) that subscriptions and memberships increased by 14% last year from a year earlier and that growth from digital paywalls had contributed to the company’s return to profitability. Condé Nast had a global digital audience of 360 million monthly average readers last year, he said, a number that excludes the Chinese market.

The company's consumer business, which includes revenue from subscriptions and e-commerce, currently accounts for about a quarter of its global revenue, Mr. Lynch said in the interview. The goal in the next four years is for that unit to generate one-third of the company's revenue, he said.

"Mr. Lynch said Condé Nast plans to invest in or possibly acquire companies that produce quality journalism, businesses that complement its subscription offerings such as exclusive membership programs, and technology that supports video or e-commerce capabilities."

"We are definitely starting to turn our sights externally and consider M&A," he said, adding that the company hasn't allocated a specific amount of capital for deals.

This week, Director of Talent, Digital Video Cynthia Simpson shares her journey from Chopped to Condé Nast, where she feels her truest and the one moment in her life she would like to relive.

__Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?__

I'm originally from Philadelphia. My mother is from South Carolina and my dad is from Ghana, West Africa. Growing up I was encouraged to be a nurse so when I decided in undergrad that video production would be my major, my parents were less than enthused. I also have a twin sister Andrea who was on her path to becoming a successful accountant (which she is) so I really needed to make this whole “work in television dream” come to fruition! 

I started and have been a freelancer for most of my creative career. My journey started at Food Network working alongside incredible chefs on shows like Iron Chef America, Barefoot Contessa and Chopped. I was also the casting director and story producer on several television network shows. One of my greatest accomplishments was winning an Emmy as a story producer for outstanding creative achievement in Interactive Media Multi-Platform Storytelling. 

After I got married and we decided to start our family I knew I would not be able to work in the same capacity so I focused on casting. I wanted to work for Condé Nast because of all the incredible brands they encompass. I had subscriptions to Allure, Glamour, Vogue and Bon App just to name a few, so when the opportunity presented itself to work here, I didn’t hesitate! 

__How do you describe your job to friends and family?__

My job is to manage the relationships and help develop the talented people that we see on our digital video platforms across all brands. I’m passionate about helping individuals find their paths to success. In this role, I am able to be that bridge and find ways they can showcase their incredible talents and share thought-provoking stories. 

__Can you share a personal reflection on Black History Month?__

Black History is American History. They need to stop denying/minimizing our stories and how African-Americans were treated.  

__What do you think is the most profound moment from African-American history in the U.S.?__

The BLM March of 2020 and the recognition of Juneteenth as a Federal holiday on June 17th, 2021. This was a long time coming. 

__As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?__

When I was a child I wanted to be an artist. I love to draw and paint. My mom would let me draw on the walls of my bedroom. I thought that was pretty cool of her. 

__Is there anything you'd like to achieve this year professionally or personally?__

Professionally I want to create as many opportunities for people to showcase their talents and be an advocate for BIPOC creatives in this industry. 
Personally, I want to have a second home in Ghana. I have been traveling there since I was a child and always felt my truest there.

__How would you describe yourself in five words?__

Cheerful

__What's one thing you’d like to change about the media industry?__

To have more transparency in compensation and stop rewarding people for bad/inappropriate behavior.

__What's the one experience that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime?__

Travel abroad. Learn about different cultures and how other people live. 

__If you could relive one moment in your life, which would it be?__

The baby shower I had in Brooklyn was incredible! It was the last big party we threw. All our loved ones were there. My mom was in the kitchen cooking a southern brunch that consisted of fried fish, cheese grits with eggs, sausage and bottomless mimosas. The day was filled with games, laughter and good music. We partied until 3am that day. I was 8 months pregnant and was still able to drop it low like Megan Thee Stallion.

GQ France's Head of Editorial Content, Pierre A. M'Pelé, today appeared on the Entreprendre dans la Mode podcast.

During the 110 minute-long episode, M'Pelé discussed his vision for GQ France. "I want to make GQ more sophisticated, I want to talk more about fashion and style because that's the essence of GQ and to make sure that we are the number one destination when it comes to talking to people about fashion, style and luxury," he said on the podcast.

He also discussed his point of view on the fashion industry, the value of print media, as well as the importance of championing diversity. 

"A magazine must be able to explain the era of time. It has to reflect today's society," he explained. "I am optimistic, my teams are optimistic, we are all aware that it will be good for both the title and Condé Nast to have people from diverse backgrounds and it will also be good for people to have a true reflection of our diverse society."

M'Pelé also discussed how he got into the industry, and the varied experience he has had so far in his career.

British Vogue's cover with Naomi Campbell and her daughter goes viral

For British Vogue's March cover, supermodel Naomi Campbell introduced the world to her new baby daughter for the first time. 

In [an interview with Sarah Harris](https://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/article/naomi-campbell-british-vogue-interview), the supermodel opened up about writing her own rules as a new mother. For the cover, Steven Meisel captured the new mother, styled by Joe McKenna, with her baby daughter. 

The little bundle of joy – who for her first Vogue appearance featured on a cover no less – was, unsurprisingly, she was a natural. “She loves the light," explained Campbell. "She’s inquisitive. She was looking at everyone – she looks at people right in the eye and for a very long time. She was taking it all in."

Inside GQ's first-ever global sports issue

GQ made history last month when it released its first-ever global sports issue. Fronted by three cover stars – footballer [Mohamed Salah](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/sport/article/mohamed-salah-interview), NBA great [Stephen Curry](https://www.gq.com/story/stephen-curry-february-cover-profile) and baseballer pitcher [Shohei Ohtani](https://www.gq.com/story/shohei-ohtani-february-cover-profile) – the issue made headlines around the world, gathering just under 900 million media impressions.

We spoke to GQ's Deputy Global Editorial Director, Adam Baidawi, about how the GQ Sports project came to life, his thoughts on sports culture around the world and why GQ is covering more women sports figures than ever before.

__GQ Sports has gone global! How did the idea come about to do a global issue and what challenges and opportunities did that present?__

We were a few months into our new global way of working, and we'd begun bouncing ideas all around the globe over Zoom. Like music – which we celebrated in our first-ever global issue – sports felt like a killer way to gel together contributions from all over GQ's network. Sports are global. Sports are unifying. Even better – sports have never been more stylish. With that agreed, we set off on the sizable challenge of booking a trio of cover stars that could represent all corners of the GQ universe. We have The Talent Group (TTG) to thank for casting three monoliths from the worlds of football, baseball and basketball. It's never easy to nab a star athlete in-season (or even off-season), but our team pulled it off...three times.

__What message did you want the first global GQ Sports issue to send you to your audiences?__

We wanted to reiterate what we do best: GQ creates moments. GQ gets deep access. And we do it across all platforms.

__Sport culture – and even the sports played – is so different around the world. Was this a challenge when kicking off this collaboration?__

I think it was the secret sauce. I mean, not going to lie: I get football, I'm deep in the weeds of the NBA, but baseball is foreign to me. Which is why it was so cool and thrilling to learn about Shohei Ohtani, this phenom who bridged Japan and the US, and became a new kind of hero in baseball folklore in the process. I like the idea that our readers across the planet can turn (or click on) a page and dive into a whole new, compelling and unfamiliar universe – we want that element of surprise to be part of what we do. 

__Why were Stephen Curry, Mo Salah and Shohei Ohtani chosen to front the GQ Sports issues?__

They all represent a paradigm shift. Steph revolutionised an entire sport – all over the world, there are 8-year-olds jacking up threes from half-court in practice. Mo's journey from Egypt to the Premier League is astonishing, but somehow what he's doing on the field is even more surprising – it was my third time working with Mo, and he's never been in better form. And Shohei is this two-way king that's flipped the narrative of what it means to be a star player in one of America's oldest sports.   

__Pay disparity between male and female sportspeople is a major topic of debate at the moment. Do you think enough is being done to address this?__

No, it's not. But I'm encouraged that GQ Sports is covering female athletes with total regularity – whether from our regular WNBA coverage, or tentpole moments like our February 2021 cover with Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird. I'm excited to see more of this from across our global network as we continue to evolve.

Vogue Netherlands, in collaboration with The City Dressers, has created Vogue – The Ultimate Gift, a larger-than-life physical artwork that this month, will be travelling through various Dutch cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Visitors will be able to use an AR filter to open the gift box and see the March cover, as well as order the issue as a limited-edition gift box. 

“Our goal with this is to really be a luxury gift for the Dutch readers.” said Maria Nanette Schaepman, Founding Editor, Vogue Netherlands. 

Vogue Netherlands produces all of its content entirely in-house, which makes it unique in the Dutch fashion magazine landscape. Its print edition is published ten times per year.

The short films “Affairs of the Art” and “On My Mind” will compete in the Best Animated Short and Best Live Action Short categories at the March 27th ceremony.

Two New Yorker films receive 2022 Academy Award nominations

"[Affairs of the Art](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/screening-room/an-illustrated-family-of-obsessives)" and "On My Mind," a pair of short films released by The New Yorker, have been nominated for Academy Awards, joining feature-length nominees that included "The Power of the Dog," "West Side Story," and "Belfast." 

The nods for "Affairs of the Art" and "On My Mind" make them the ninth and tenth New Yorker films to receive Oscar nominations. The 2022 ceremony will take place on March 27th, in Hollywood.

"It's thrilling to see not one but two New Yorker films receive nominations today. As we continue to expand into short films, I'm grateful to all of my colleagues who make this work possible, and to the Academy members who recognized the craft and artistry here," David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, said.

Nominated in the Best Animated Short category, "Affairs of the Art," directed by Joanna Quinn and Les Mills, presents an off-kilter, warm-hearted glimpse into a family of eccentrics. Beryl, a Welsh housewife and the film’s energetic narrator, is “drinking from the cup of creativity” as she shares her interest in drawing and recounts the parallel obsessions of many of her family members, who transform their own passions—toy trains, pet pigeons, revenge—into art through the power of their attention. Quinn and Mills have been making films about Beryl since 1987 – "Affairs of the Art" is the fourth – and both won Emmys, in 1999, for their work on an animated adaptation of "The Canterbury Tales." Quinn's work has been nominated for an Academy Award once before, for the 1996 animated short film "Famous Fred."

"On My Mind," written and directed by the Danish filmmaker Martin Strange-Hansen, is nominated in the Best Live Action Short category and unfolds in a nearly deserted bar, where a man asks to perform a karaoke song with deeply personal meaning. "On My Mind" will début on [newyorker.com](https://www.newyorker.com/) later this year, and marks the second Academy Award nomination for Strange-Hansen, who won in the same category, in 2003, for the film "This Charming Man."

Inside Pierre A. M'Pelé's first issue of GQ France

Last month, Pierre A. M'Pelé unveiled his [first issue of GQ France](https://www.gqmagazine.fr/lifestyle/article/antoine-dupont-le-nouveau-super-heros-du-sport-francais) as the brand’s Head of Editorial Content. 

You almost certainly spotted the issue’s hugely popular cover on Instagram, which featured [French rugby player Antoine Dupont](https://www.instagram.com/p/CZHuLUUMv7I/) – as never seen before – in a canary yellow bath robe. The cover was praised for being both "[special](https://www.lefigaro.fr/sports/rugby/top-14/stade-toulousain-dupont-prend-la-pose-au-milieu-d-ernest-wallon-20220125)" and unexpected and reached over 800K followers across social media. 

We spoke with M'Pelé – who is also known as by his online alias Pam Boy – about putting the issue together and his plans for the GQ brand. 

__Tell us about yourself. How did you first find your way into the industry?__

I was born in Paris and grew up between France and West and North Africa. I studied fashion journalism at Central Saint Martins and graduated in 2017. I started by assisting the Editor-in-Chief and Fashion Director of Varon magazine in my first year of University. Then, during my studies, I was working for several titles including ODDA magazine and Dansk magazine. I was also working as a freelance styling assistant. After my studies, I worked for Loic Prigent on French TV, and for Katie Grand at LOVE magazine and PERFECT magazine. I've also launched my own publication, named SCRNSHT. I've always tried to keep myself busy and gain as much experience as possible.

__What did the GQ brand mean to you before you became part of the family?__

I'm an avid magazine collector, so GQ was amongst the titles I would buy in my teenage years. But in 2014, I won a student GQ competition called "GQ What's Next" and presented my project alongside the other international winners at the GQ Conference in Paris in January 2015.

__Your first issue of GQ France has a fresh new look and it’s just a total vibe we're loving. Tell us how the first issue came together.__

I wanted to take a risk and shake up the senses of the typical GQ France reader. I wanted to see how our audience would react. The entire making of the issue was a baptism of fire, but I learned a lot in the process. I'm looking forward to keeping on fine tuning my vision for GQ France.

__What are you most looking forward to taking on in your first year as GQ France's Head of Editorial Content?__

Unifying print, digital, social media, and events is the biggest and most exciting mission. I have a 360-degree plan for GQ France, so I'm looking forward to implementing key changes in order to establish this new way of working for the brand. Not to mention that events are especially important in order to build our GQ community in France. It's one of our main priorities, simply because a strong community is the beating heart of any great brand.

__You've had incredible success in your career so far! What is the best piece of career advice you have ever been given?__

Be as bold as possible. Also, one of my mottos is in fact a precept from Napoleon Bonaparte that can be loosely translated as "one jumps into the frey, then figures out what to do next." I think that's how any creative endeavour should be approached.
